Cayuga County
(responses from students pursuing degrees at campuses in Cayuga County)
Advertise
better job scope
Book that list companies, schools, job listings, ect.. with contact names and
address' that graduates can send resumes
Colleges can inform new grads by having employers come in to speak to
students...& interviewing for job positions.
Get more available jobs
HAS NOTHING TO OFFER
Have a job placement program
have a one day intro class- show a video on what the city offers and where it is
offered to all new students
have maybe job fairs or career fairs at area colleges
Have someone show me around.
I am not really sure. I guess they could run an article or area in the local
newspaper that could talk about it.
I could not say, as I have lived here all my life and am familiar with the area.
I'm pretty familiar as a long-time resident and an employee in a county tourism
department.
Its been doing fine so far. Keep up the good work.
Job Fair
job fairs
job fairs
Job Fairs Brochures Website directed at Jobs in Cayuga County Collaboration
between area schools and college
Let it be known to the public...like on the news where to find out the
information or in the weekly paper.
Local Job Fair/ Expos relating to medical field
Maybe some kind of mailings in the newspaper or maybe a seminar that is offered.
more advertising
more opportunities for a career
mre job fairs
Newsletter regarding jobs in the area. Local recruitment for different careers
Not much...I have lived around my area my entire life and know a lot about it.
Nothing, I am an adult learner with a family and my mind is made upi that i do
not want to remain in CNY at this point in my life!
Offer some things to new college graduates...
Provide some sort of meetings or conventions aimed tward the newly or recently
graduated student, that plans to stay local.
research
Seminars for people starting over.
Send mailings to people attending the college telling of the oportunites and
offerings to new collegs graduates.
Talk to people and go places
There should be more interships available. More on the job experience at a two
year school. Auburn should really try to get better jobs and do more for the
people, they should put more money into keeping people there, rather than some
of the other "stupid" things that they spend money on. Not to say that i wont be
staying in Auburn more than
likely.

Cortland County
(responses from students pursuing degrees at campuses in Cortland County)
It can
provide discount offers for goods and services. It can provide more
community-based opportunities, in cooperation with the university, for
internships, recereational activities, off-site educatinal opportunities.
mroe places to shop
Offer more opportunities outside the college campus
open up more opportunities
Putting flyers up in the dorms would be excellent. Also, ads in the campus
newspaper would help. As well as commercials both on television and the
radio.
| Return to "Findings" home page | Go to top of page |
Herkimer County (responses
from students pursuing degrees at campuses in Herkimer County)
advetise local
job openings better, hold more job fairs at the college
Am already very familiar with this area, have lived in central NY for most of my
life.
Have more college fairs or flyers that are focused on job opportunities and
interships for all majors that the college has.
Maybe a Graduate day for those who are about to enter the work force and don't
even know where to begin. Such as housing opportunities and such.
Provide a listing of Sports events/facilities (such as indoor soccer fields,
baseball batting cages, etc.)
They need more businesses and better outreach programs. A lot of people around
here have no idea what they want to do. If they do know what they want, they
have no where to turn to for
help.

Madison County (responses
from students pursuing degrees at campuses in Madison County)
Actively Recruit
for summer internships in the area that have broad exposure to the area.
Adevertise and create internships/volunteer opportunities for students about
businesses and industry in the area.
advertise
advertise
Advertise and really push it on campuses
Advertise any medical schools in the area much better. Have more representatives
come to the schools and let us know what they have to offer. Offer students a
chance to visit the hospitals and be a part of the background work involved.
Advertise in campus publications or on campus.
Advertise in the College paper
advertise jobs, post wanted jobs in career centers
Advertise more local job opportunities to current college students.
Advertise more on campus
Advertise outside of "career services" emails...we don't read them.
advertise with more descriptive details about the benifits of the job.
Advertise/recruit to universities
Advertisements...programs at school
Alot of advertisment on TV, Radio, Internet etc...
At Colgate, I would like to see a small independent (although it doesn't
necessarily be independent) publication that publishes not only the events going
on at Colgate but in the greater area. I would like this to include shows,
exhibitions, bands, etc.
Better advertise job offers.
better on campus recruiting by local industries
Better public transportation
Better transportation and more comprehensive guide to the area upon arrival at
the college. Better familiarize students with everything the area has to offer.
Better transportation into the city
bring more companies to colgate to recruit
Bring recruiting programs to campus.
Bring students out into the field and show them trades etc. Even having some
kind of convention to get information out. Have more opportunities to interact
with the people in town Publicize the volunteer groups on campus with more
vigor.
Businesses from the area speaking to the college and going to students in the
majors where employees would be needed in the future.
Businesses in the area can maybe send information to the colleges so they can
make the students aware of what is out there. Also, professors and mentors can
really go out and look at all the possible jobs that a person can do in their
major, then sit down with their students to inform them and see what they may be
interested in.
career fairs
Career Fairs including area employment and internship opportunities on campus.
Realestate/Rental advertisements. Area restaurant/store coupons.
career fairs. i think our campus' career services does a good job of informing
students of career options and opportunities.
Colgate offers good services
collaborate with local business to establish a single source of fields that are
in need of work, areas that are potentially expecting field expansion. make this
source available to local colleges.
Come to campus and have a lecture or mail things to students on campus... i get
a lot of things through e-mail
Come to Colgate and show us what Syracuse and the area has to offer in terms of
jobs and continuing education.
Commercials, information at Career Services, mail, advertisements in local
newspapers, offering more internships in the area.
Companies can publicize opportunities within their organizations or visit
college campuses and conduct information sessions with college students.
contact the graduates personally
create a easily mapped web page that is known by all college professors and
students that describes job oportunities, cost of living, other usefull
information
Create a pamphlet with information and opportunities about the area.
Create pamphlets, offer seminars or set up informational tables at
colleges/universities in the area.
Do a better job of getting the news out to career services, advertise,
presentations at schools, the possibilities are endless JUST DO SOMETHING!!
Do alot of community service activities and supply internships to non-profit
organizations located near by
Do more to tell students that the area has well paying jobs and is safe.
do not know
Don't focus on how the CNY region is like more urban areas. Instead, show me the
unique benefits of living in CNY.
email
Email the students about opportunities in the immediate area, and say something
like, "because you went to school here, you have a better chance at landing this
job/internship/etc."
email, mail
E-mails
e-mails, campus programs, tv ads
Encourage colleges (especially career services offices) to inform students about
opportunities and social life in the area.
Expand. I feel, although I may be incorrect, that the area is much too small to
support its college graduates. If I am incorrent, then maybe the jobs are not
marketable.
get bigger in population and warmer
get company reps at my college to talk with me
give a tour
good website
Hamilton has very few job opportunities available, but I have yet to be educated
about the opportunities of a broader region. More information or promotion would
be helpful.
hand out guides or info books
Have a career fair with job opportunities within Central New York alone.
Have companies in the area that offering good paying jobs to new graduates come
on campus to meet with interested students
have fairs on campus
Have information on websites
Have more after college fairs
Have more details about the environment
Have more gatherings will college students from other schools.
have more job fairs
Have more people
have more people from the area be involved with career services. students
actually read those emails
Have postings, come to college fairs, personally contact the students that are
in the program
have public lists of career opportunities in every field available
have representatives from various organizations attend career fairs or grad
school fairs at the colleges, so they are aware of options before they graduate
have some kind of newsletter or programs that talk about job opportunities and
graduate school programs in the area
have some seminars
have the young people in the community come to talk to Colgate students, or at
least show themselves. Many students question the age range of the Hamilton
community because the young crowd seems invisible.
hold events off of campus, at different campuses and in syracuse. provide
transportation
Hold information sessions with area organizations and companies at the college.
Hold lectures or forums
Hold more meetings about after college graduation. Present the college graduated
with more job opportunities.
hold presentations on campus- job fairs
I do not know much about the Syracuse area and what opportunities it has to
offer in terms of jobs.
I dont know
I don't know
I don't know anything about what it has to offer. Maybe a website on this topic
that is advertised to college students in the region.
I don't know.
I don't really know of any at this point...it all depends on how you feel and
what you are looking for!
I have no idea. Email and career services are the best bet.
I have not seen any advertising at all aimed at college graduates
I have worked here for a summer previously and it is the simple fact that there
is a lack of large law firms, the federal government or other politically
related fields.
I honestly have no idea. I'm not a typical student anyway.
I think it does a good job making available jobs known to college graduates
I would like to see even more people visiting the school from local businesses
to hire graduates or offer internships. A lot of students try to find these
opportunities, but are unsuccessful.
Improve public transportation
Info sessions, handouts, etc.
Inform me through a newsletter or through my college
information as to housing and job availability
Information session through Career Services or some department to discuss with
students all the potential offerings of the area
Information sessions on campus
Internships at lawfirms within the local area
It can advertise what it has to offer. I have no idea what opportunities Central
NY has.
It cannot-the area is depressed economically and the weather sucks-This will
never allow it to be competitive in the job market.
It could extend more information to the Colgate community about graduate
schools. Many Colgate students look to go to graduate school after graduation
and are not sure of many of these type of opportunities in the area.
it is a small community
It's done fine
job and/or grad school fair familiarize us with internships around the area.
job availability i.e more internships
job fair
Job Fairs
job fairs that include my field
JOB FAIRS TO PROMOTE EMPLOYERS
Job Fairs, internships.
job fairs. advertizing
Job postings, more advertisement on campus.
just infor students what the syracuse area has to offer.
just let us know, it doesn't seem like there is anything outside of the college
towns
lectures, more visible organizations and what they're doing, recruitment
let me know what jobs are available
let students know what the job outlook is in the area. also what jobs are
offered in the area and how well they are doing.
local businesses should do more recruiting and become more competitive in their
job offers. also maybe come to colleges and perform presentations on all the
positive career opportunities in the area.
Local Career Fairs and interview days with local employers. Most at Colgate are
from NYC or Boston which easily draws students out of CNY.
Local companies should be more visible.
Make it seem like the ideal place to live. Show the students the positives. Make
this area an attraction. Bring the business in!
Make pamphlets, air commercials, send information in the mail
Maybe have some events at my college.
Maybe send out some kind of brochures, or possibly television ads. Links with
the schools web page.
more ads
More advertisements
more businesses...little shops with clothes, accessories
More career planning/job opportunity announcements for all available companies
in the area.
More internshipd and what not
More internships around the schools that can possibly utilized while attending
classes (if time allows).
more internships, advertisements
More job fairs and internship opportunities.
More job fairs, on-campus recruitment
More job opportunities for the students. Building more restuarant, galleries,
etc...or jobs in individuals fields of study.
More job publications
More jobs in my field of Fashion Design. Bring jobs by adding higher in retail
stors and more jobs on a larger scale. With more jobs, comes more people being
able to consume more. With more consumers, comes more room for the fashion
industry. Most people want to buy new clothes each month. Many people like
desinger lable products, or
brand name.
more media targeted toward my age group, flyers, radio ads, internet ETC.. about
Caz and MADISON COUNTY
More on-campus recruiting of various organizations
More programs and more oppurtunities for new college student.
more programs at school showing what there is around the area
More programs explain what there is to offer new graduates.
more programs for students
more programs, job fairs, and internships.
more publicity
More stuff to do
My college (Colgate) mainly publicizes jobs in NYC, Boston, and Washington, so
maybe area businesses should recruit on campus? I haven't put much time into my
job search yet, so I don't know what the area does or doesn't do for college
grads.
Newsletters or publications would be nice. I have not come across any job
listings on Colgate's campus. In order to "better familiarize me with what the
area has to offer new college graduates," programs like "a day in the life" or
information sessions would be helpful.
Not a lot. I feel that the area is chosen mainly because it is an escape for
most students from high-pressure, stressful, busier atmostpheres like cities.
Students choose college here, in my case Colgate, because it is beautiful and
scenic and an escape from the rest of society, not because they want to live in
an industrial cesspool.
Not be so rural. Have a more liberal feel. It's really not the best place for
college graduates to live and work, unless they want to work on a farm or at a
school.
nothing really, continue to have colleges provide lots of activities off campus
and in the area
Nothing really, I like to explor on my own.
Nothing really...I want to go back to Canada so I wouldn't listen anyways
NOTHING, CAZENOVIA DOES A GREAT JOB
Nothing, I think its fine. I like that the Oncenter has job fairs and events to
show us what is out there for after we graduate.
Nothing, it is very small and easy to become familiar with
Nothing, the area is awful.
Nothing. The career center at colgate is great.
Offer a tour of different companies in the areas to see if they offer the kind
of jobs each student is looking for. So they can see the day to day workforce of
their chosen field.
Offer any kind of transportation
Offer fliers, emails or pamphlets on job offerings, etc.
Offer information sessions outside of the college
Offer more connections working with surrounding towns/cities (those larger than
Hamilton).
Offer more information in College offices/Career Offices.
Offer more off-campus programs, like buses to surrounding areas, etc.
(especially the city!).
offer more stores
offer more transportation to and from the hubs of business
offer programs showing what the cities of Syracuse, etc. are like....have
recruiters from there come here
Offer summer programs or internships in the immediate area- with good enough pay
to enable students to pay for some of their college expenses.
On campus programs/information sessions with local area employers Provide
numbers of alumni who stayed to work in the area that students could call
on campus publicizing, more undergraduate internships and part time jobs
on-campus programs
Opportunities after graduate school and opportunities for personal growth in the
community. I have that in my undergrad studies here but I do not think I would
obtain that after my graduate studies.
organize programs on campus to educate students
pamphlets
pamphlets
perhaps a listing of job opportunities and such...
Perhaps have some special programs on the college campus to raise awarness of
job opportunities and also facilitate workshops that demonstrate the scope of
potential fields of employment, housing, entertainment etc.
Possibly hold more forums and information systems to describe what is around
here and what it has to offer.
Post job flyers
post job opportunities and housing options
Present a job fair with companies from the area
Presentations at the area colleges to give students information reguarding the
benefits of remaining in the area after graduation.
Presentations on campus would be helpful, maybe at the standard "job fairs."
Professors should talk with their students more often about opportunities in the
surrounding areas
Provide entertainment, awareness
Provide information that would be available to students in the area.
Provide more advertisements for positions in the area through the
college/university. Hold more information sessions regarding local positions.
Provide more information on campus and have more job fairs
Provide on-campus workshops. Advertise more through Career Services.
Provide pamphlets on post graduate housing, job recruitment, and statistics of
the average income of recent graduates in the area
Provide Seminars at individual colleges, offer a support service of some kind
publicize
publicize opportunities through career services, offer appealing summer
internship programs for students (model after the "colgate on the cuyahoga"
program designed to attract students to working life in cleveland)
Publish something, even a brouchure to inform college grads.
Recruiting fairs at my college
recruitment opportunities for college grads information on possible grad schools
in the area
send emails, brochures, put adds in college newspapers
Send information in the mail about events updates. Deliver area newspapers to
campus where such events would be listed.
Send me a flier or something. Anyways, I'm just a freshman and don't really need
to know these things yet.
Send me a magazine/brochure
send out brochures/information packets with the job possibilties for specific
majors/disciplines
Send out emails/brochures about what is happening for college students.
send out flyers to the surrounding colleges
Send out newsletters and have recruitment representatives present on campus.
send programs to schools
Send representatives to local schools to inform the students on the various
social options available in the area.
Send us bulletins of average apartment rental, housing stuff, etc. What downtown
Syracuse is really like on the weekends.
Send us mail about opportunities.
sent info
Sent out e-mails of postal mail
show it as a vibrant working area, there are more industries than people see
daily and in order to entice people those must be brought to the forefront.
show me
speak with professors and students on individual level
Speakers, brochures at school
Speeches on it or demonstrations in the area.
sponsor more informational programs about syracuse and what it has to offer
talk with students, newsletters, bring culture to area
The area can describe where your feild of study is most needed.
The area can offer incentives to visit places to which they want to attract
recent grads, such as free meals, lodging, or other events.
The area cannot do too much. It is a small rural town with no connections to big
cities. However, my college has a Career Service Center that helps college
graduates.
The area could definitely advertise local attractions better
The area could hold more job fairs or publish listings for jobs or apartments in
the campus newspaper to make students aware of what's out there.
The area has a lot of things going for it, but I don't really see a place where
information on what it has to offer recent graduates is available. In this day
an age, some sort of website with high publicity would probably be the way to
go. There is a lack of knowledge because the information can be difficult to
ferret out and compile on one's own.
The area has to provide more job opportunities and be more focused on younger
people as far as entertainment goes. The weather is also horrible.
The area should offer more internships or opportunities for students to
volunteer during and after their college career. As it is, I am much more likely
to live in a rural area after attending a college in a rural area than I would
have been otherwise.
The Syracuse area has nothing to offer to new college graduates.
The town of Cazenovia is notoriously unfriendly toward its college students. It
would be nice if there were further efforts between the two to learn to "live
with one another". Also A REGULAR BUS TO SYRACUSE FROM MADISON COUNTY WOULD BE
AMAZING!!!
Umm.. not much. Cazenovia is too small to offer many opportunities and Syracuse
has too poor of an enconomy to do it either.
Visit college campuses for informational sessions
visul tour
Work through Career Services programming
Work through Colgate's Career Services
Wouldn't pay attention anyway.

Oneida County (responses
from students pursuing degrees at campuses in Oneida County)
advertise on campus
anything
anything...i haven't heard about any opportunities.
become more liberal, have greater attractions, night life, more entertainment
BETTER HOUSING
Better relationships....more information at some of the town's offerings
Bring representatives to the college campuses so that we have some idea about
what is offered here in the area
brochures
Change its weather
Come on campus more
Come on campus more
Come to campus with a wide variety of job opportunities, including service jobs
that can be done one or two years after graduation. A Syracuse job fair would
most likely be well attended at my school if well adveritized.
Considering it doesn't have anything to offer college graduates, nothing.
Create a relationship with the school within which area jobs offer internships
in fields of study or perspective careers.
don't know... it seems that if a local company is interested in students from my
school, they come here and hold info sessions, if they don't do that, i'd
imagine people just leave fo other places naturally after graduation.
During new student orientation, arrange with the school a program on what the
area offers. With specific departments, arrange for opportunities for field-work
or field trips to get students off-campus.
Educate us about the opportunities available around this area.
FREQUENT distribution of well-researched, upated pamphlets in college campuses.
There are several different entertainment venues for college students within the
area, but there simply is no means of getting there - perhaps a shuttlebus of
some sort could be arranged to take students back and forth for a minimal fee?
have college career center advertise about the information it has (if it has
any)
Have commercials and posters.
have more activities for college students
Have pamphlets or some form of booklet to show off the Armory Square District
and its new apartments and other new infastructure.
Have represenatative come to campus
hum... I've never thought about this before. I have never intended on remaining
in the area after graduation.
i basically know nothing about what the area has to offer college graduates,
maybe more information on campus, lecture or on campus event to spread awareness
I can't imagine much change due to the very small and rural population of
Clinton, NY. There does not appear to be many business opporutnites or
occupational variety in the area due to the ruralness.
I don't know
I guess they can just make sure that the college students know whenever there is
an event through emails and posters and signs. I know about certain things in
the area, but a lot of them I don't.
I think Hamilton has done a good job of showing students what the Utica area has
to offer. There are summer internships offered at The Hartford Financial Group
and Metlife Insurance. I think the area needs to show that there are nice
housing options, a good social life for young people and attractive job
opportunities. The area is known, at least at my
school, for being economically depressed and un appealing for 20 something
Im not sure
I'm not sure because I haven't really started looking yet.
I'm not sure.
I'm not sure--I don't watch tv or listen to the radio very often.
Increase and/or improve what Utica has to offer.
Increase publicity within academic concentrations of available opportunities, as
well as quality of life in the area
Inform students about opportunities offered by local firms
information sessions at schools, emails, posters
Job listings
Local businesses and organizations should publicize internship opportunities on
campus.
Make going into the various areas seem appealing and welcoming.
maybe provide us with a better network
More internships/field work available to students in the central New York
region.
More on campus recruiting, job fairs etc.
more on-campus job fairs
More opportunities to get involved in the community, or better advertisement of
current opportunities, also small things like inviting college students to
community events and fairs, keeping in contact with students
More publicity about grad schools and job opporunities regarding government
multicompany/graduate program fairs
newsletters about career opportunities
Newspaper or other publication informing me of community/state wide events or
prospects
Not sure, I'm not really looking, I have no desire to live here in the future.
Nothing - I grew up here and I don't want to stay here.
Nothing - to be honest I don't think much of it.
Nothing. It just not my place.
offer internships specifically to students in the region, publicize
opportunities directly to students (emails, flyers in mailboxes)
perhaps make available the costs of living in the area versus the types of jobs
available
Perhaps you could try and change people's perceptions about rural living. Most
people see it as dull and uncultured. If you change that view, you would see an
increase in graduates staying around.
presentation by community at college
Produce a publication with opportunities. Have a job fair similar to ones held
in Boston and New York where many employers attend, and many students can go
with their resumes etc. and speak with potential employers.
promote local graduate degree programs, and local industries that hire
skilled/highly educated professionals
Provide information about housing options.
Provide information on and encourage local internships.
Provide more information on intership opportunities in the area
publication of internships and jobs
recruit and have seminars on campus
Recruit on campus.
Send more information to the College's career center
Send out letters with information
send representatives to campus to talk to students about local opportunities
Tell our career center
the area is too small for me. i like the city. there is not much culture or
diversity
there coul dbe more job recrutors on campus
They could send representatives from local businesses to talk to students about
what their business entails. Also, if local businesses or other types of work
were to actively seek out college students from my school, I think that many
students would be interested in pursuing that area of work.
Visit the college. Work more with career cneters on campus.
work with Hamilton's career center
A listing of jobs specific to my area of study and information about rate of
pay, standard of living, and houses available in the area(s) the job is located.
I also wish the listings for jobs for Upstate NY was separate from the
Downstate/Metropolitan area.
Advertise on tv or radio occasionally to inform the public of the benefits of a
college education
advertisemants in the paper
Anything
better choices for internet classes
better distribute to comm. colleges
Better job opertunities
Better jobs, and a somewhat higher salary
Better posting of job/ career opportunities.
Bring better jobs with more pay
College Graduation Seminars & more Business Seminars
College Parties
dO MORE ADVERTIZING AND TRY TO INFORM IN A MORE SIMPLE WAY.
Give more information on what is out there before and after you have decided on
your degree.
Have more job fairs, information about what's available in the area, more local
promotion, etc.
have more job opportunities and internships
Have more things to do around here
Have WELL-CONSTRUCTED, easy to access web-pages.
I think that as long as the college is informed and I am still able to talk to
the school about my options in the community then I will have enough information
to make a decision. I have several professors that are very helpful when I have
questions about continuing my education toward a Master's Degree and about job
opportunities.
I think that the area can better familiarize the people of what jobs has to
offer more. More advertisement, or Job surveys, more work shops
I think that the area needs to start teaching about the job opportunities at a
younger age so they know whats around and start to think about what they would
like to do and if anything around here is offering them something they want.
I think the area needs to do a better job in attracting and retaining college
grads with advertisement.
I would like to know how to go about applying for the agencies that deal with my
field. Many of these agencies seem to recruit from within. I never see my
particular field listed in any of the local clasifieds.
If this question means: What can the government better do, or agencies of the
government ( C of C ) etc: Then I guess building a web site designed to assist
newly graduated students desiring to live, work, start a busisness in your area.
This site should be staffed with live bodies designed to facilitate linking of
recent graduates with the information or
points of contact they need to assist them in finding employment, housing
I'm happy with it
it can hold information sessions and post fliers around the campus to amek surwe
that everyone is made aware of the opportunities
It could make the area more attractive to current college students.
It has to offer good jobs, more advertisments about what area offers, also it
has to give more info on who lives in this area( e.g. what percent of
international people or refugees from different countries), also what special
services does this area offers, is it mostly young people or middle aged or
older people (what percent)

job fairs
jobs listing and networking abiliies
keep the student body up to date on the current job market for the surrounding
area.
more advertisements
more advertising for employment oppurtunities
more awareness of the businesses that exist in the are
More cultural events aimed towards younger people
more frequent & better avertized job fairs
more information
more information to the colleges. we get information about trasfering to other
places, but nothing directly out of school. I have no clue how much I can make
in this area or the type of jobs I can get. also make it easier for college
students to get a job. most of the jobs out there want many years experiance and
if they don't they will pay little to the person
who has no work experiance. It is not fair.
More job fairs that include multiple settings, i.e. private practice, hospital,
physician corporations, etc.
more job fairs with my field being represented
more jobs fairs
More on campus functions that are open to the public.
Not much, this is where I'm from.
Not necessary, I am from the area
Nothing that I can think of.
offer more cultural events
Offer more internship opportunities while at college, so after graduation you
already have experience and a foot in the door
Offer more job fairs, have college night at area businesses
post more internships in a wider variety of jobs, similar to the BOCES program
of regional excellence where students shadow a person in the field
Provide Infomation in more conveniant areas for me.
Put up more flyers in the community.
send out job opportunities to college centers or even individual students to
allow the students to be better informed about what the area has to offer
Send part time students information on continuing their education past an
associates.
Show as strong economic improvement
stop pushing businesses, especailly the manufactoring and small businesses out
tell me
The area has to first offer more opportunities to recent graduates
the area is the one with a lot of oportunities that offered high technical jobs
The Economic Developement Office is already doing a fair job now.
There needs to be better businesses, and better hangouts. Like fixing up Varick
Street to be more like a bar street. I think that would be very effective.
They actually do a great job at it.
They need to advertise more. They need to show college students what they have
to offer outside in the community.
Warm up the temperature, this state is rediculously cold
We need better jobs that pay beyond the cost of living.
advertise job opportunities
Advertise more on tv, send emails to students as to what is going on in the
community,
advertize and hire, i only hear that places aren't hiring
better job choices,more internships.
Bring more job opportunities. Clean up city and surrounding areas.
community awareness for the students regarding the benefits of the area and
career opportunities it provides
Create more entertaining and display more passion for the job and the
environment i wish to work in.
Encourage more open-house type events that allow graduates-to-be a chance to see
what is out there and offered in this area.
Flyers
Flyers or pamphlets sent to students at the end of the semester showing the
types of jobs in the area and companies in each of these fields.
Flyers, increase the time that things are open till (movie theaters,
restaurants, pizza places, bars, etc.), I think the area needs to do more
research on other college towns for example take a look at what albany does
(live at five, later hours for the things listed above, etc.)
give us more opportunities to talk with employters
have more activities that could include college students at SUNYIT
I don't know, I've never seen this done.
I feel that businesses should utilize colleges as a resource and actively
promote opportunites they have within colleges, whether it is for internships or
for jobs they have available. The area specifically can and should do more to
try and attract new businesses that would employ people graduating in area
colleges. If the goal is to keep graduates local,
then more jobs in their related fields of study must be available in the
I have lived here most of my life so I am familiar with the opportunities.
I think that the area should advertise more companies that are looking for new
college graduates. When they advertise the company they should include what kind
of benefits that will come with the job opportunity.
Letting us know what employers there are that might be interested in our major.
At this point I don't go to Career Fairs on campus because I'm not looking for a
job. I will in several years when I'm closer to finishing my degree. But it
would be nice to know what is out there and what they are looking for so you
could possibly focus courses in your major
towards what is available. As an example, I'm a Computer Science major. I w
Maybe more Job Bulletins, Fairs
more business career fairs
More employer recruitment! JOBS (or lack thereof) is/are the biggest reason for
the "brain drain" of college grads. More job fairs should be held and more
employers should post on places like centralnyhelpwanted.com, CareerBuilder
(through Utica OD) etc.
More internships & site visits!!
more job fairs available info at college for senior year
More on campus recruiting for jobs that are directly related to the course
programs students are taking. Also, a much more diverse selection of job
opportunities that encompass all majors!
Most on-campus job fairs.
nice website(s) introducing every aspects
NO COMENTS REGARDING WHAT THE AREA CAN DO,
Nothing, this place doesn't really have much to offer college students.
Offer more practical tranning or offcampus jobs for first initial tranning
.Student have to rush to big cities for intership and other jobs to just get
familiarise with the job environment without breaking their studies
Offer more things to do for college students that does not involve drinking.
Offer opportunities while in school to include them in the community.
postings of different jobs, opportunities...
Promote job growth such that companies want to stay, expand, hire more staff,
promote excisting people within the company, etc. The area could also advertise
new jobs in such a way that the general masses know what new jobs are available.
Change the political system in Albany such that the system works for the people
instead of those who occupy
those offices.
Realistic, area specific, locally generated salary surveys. Many national level,
including government, organizations provide this information by zip code, yet
employers say the figures are not realistic. This creates an atmosphere of
distrust. It's not that salaries are low, most of us understand the cost of
living concept, but why the difference between govt
reports and employers???
recruit, plant/site tours
send out a flyer
send out emails
Some of the offices to get information about jobs, internships and the area
could be move readily accesible.
stuff
That isn't important- they need to lower taxes and stop suffocating us!
The area needs to grow, Utica has nothing to offer young people.
THEY COULD HAVE MORE JOB FAIRS.
website
workshops
A more diverse economy to accomodate more graduate employment.
Achieve a higher ranking in the business graduate degree programs.
advertise
advertise job offerings
advertise more on television
advertise more outside actitivies at the college.
advertise or hold functions at the schools
Advertize through campus career services
Anything to let me know what jobs are out there and what i need to do to get
them. I would love to live in this area after college but if i can live better
somewhere else, i'm leaving.
Area offers many types of assistance
Bring more cultural events as well as options for young adults. It seems that
many people who go to school in this area are from this area. Since I'm comming
from another state, I'd like to see more professional opportunities offered as
well as adding more nightlife to the area.
Build more places for college students under the age of 21 so they have
somewhere to go. Also, bring more businesses and corporations here so graduates
can use their degrees around here.
Business Growth, increase in population size
come to job seaking programs
conduct more surveys
create a booklet with available organizations and their hiring. to college
campuses from all businesses in the region.
Degree specific seminars and departmental recruitment efforts
Design a college course to be taken during your junior or senior year that can
give details

them through emails, billboards etc.
During the beginning of the fall semester give a tour of the area. Offer a bus
tour or something like that.
Flyers at the college
give a a weekend tour of the area and the stuff there is to do.
give sessions about the community, put up posters, have professors tell there
students before or after class, talk with advisors about it
give some sort of info

(Low taxes, good schools, entertainment, etc.)
Have a type of job fair, or send out flyers or pamphlets around a school
advertising for specific majors and what there is to offer.
have a website available for search on information of the city, including
population, commerce, etc.
have businesses offer more information about jobs and careers available in the
area to the incoming freshmen and college graduates to help students know what
jobs there are in the surrounding areas
Have career fares and work with college to contact personally. Come to us and
find students and help them get into field.
Have fairs on campus introducing the job openings from the major organizations.
Have more activities which display what there is to offer in this area.
Have more job fairs and include information on housing, schools, crime,
entertainment options, etc. that the area has to offer.
Have more opportunities
Have some kind of campus fair
Higher wages
I am not really sure. I have been here at Utica College for 2 years, and to be
honest, the only place i know of right now that people really work is the
mall, banks, or at the college. lol.. there are no big businesses to my knowledge
I am not sure yet. It offers the internships when one reaches the further levels
or the education program.
I am unsure.
I don't feel that I can answer this question since I live off-campus and have
lived in the area all my life.
I dont know
I don't know
I don't know, maybe I'm not looking hard enough.
I grew up here so I am aware of what the area offers
I have no idea. I've lived here most of my life.
I think if there were more incentives and more advertising and letting us know
what is out there and how to find out more about it would be helpful.
I think that the Mohawk Valley and Utica area should host more job fairs or put
some sort of publication out to colleges stating what are the top positions
needed in the area, what type of jobs are available in the area, or where there
are shortages. Also, more advertising for employment websites and other
recreational activities and entertainment.
Improve night life and other activities for college students.
Informational packets
It can advertice the different Job opportunities that it has to offer college
graduates. More participation in career fairs.
job right when i graduate
Make information availabe on campus.
make the job abailability clearer
maybe it could hold a college fair with brochures and info about housing, rent,
cost of living, possible jobs, etc. Even if you decide not to stay, it gives you
a place to start.
Maybe offer career fairs to close to graduating students to get a close contact
in the field established
MDA or CoC campaign touting the area's potential, even if it's forgounding
fluff, for goodness sakes do SOMETHING. ADVERTISE.
more advertising
more information on campuses, more ways to get out and dot higns, and include
students to showw them what the area has to offer
More job opportunites and places to go and things to do for college students
more job opportunities to keep people here after graduation
more jobs
more public awareness.
Newsletters, websites, magazines, career fairs
nothing -i have lived in the area all my life -but perhaps a community
information brochure would be adventageus to those students looking at CNY for
possible academic endeavors.
Nothing really, I prefer to go out on my own and meet people. The current social
events are plentiful enough so I cannot complain.
offer guides that are readily available to students
offer maps or lists of information, attractions, etc. list stores, laundromats,
libraries, etc in a brochure of some sort.
Offer me a tour or some kind of a booklet to look at.
offer more advancement
Offer public forums to discuss community needs in certain job industries and
what that community would like to bring in as new jobs
offer something which leads graduates to jobs in their field with the assistance
of previous graduates who have found jobs in the area.
pamphlets
post advertisements, radio ads
Post information throughout campus. Most jobs posted are out of state.
Promote area salary comparisons
Promote it's companies and job oppertunities to all schools in all fields of
study, constant job fairs for high skilled and educated labor.
Provide opportunities and showings for commuter studetns
Put ads in the campus newspaper or hang up flyers.
Seminars, pamphlets, someone in the colleges itself
send out a pamphlet with current opportunities
send out information
Send out more brochures to the dorm rooms. I read the fliers that they set out.
Stop the weather, and become a little smaller
The area does a good job offering many activities to get the new college
graduates involved with the job fairs and internships offered within the area
tourists guides brochures
Utica is a dying city and doesn't have much to offer here. It's not a prospering
economic zone, and it is not my ideal cost-of-living.
visit the college with existing job opportunities
Ways to pay for the expenses
yes because i grew up around here
Onondaga County (responses
from students pursuing degrees at campuses in Onondaga County)
"area" is quite a
vague word, but i often am unaware of everything that syracuse has to offer and
find out about events after the fact, so if the area actually wants to include
students in its events and general business there needs to more advertisement
? Brochures in the career services office?
A better economy but with Bush in office again...good luck.
A career fair featuring area companies that specialize in scientific,
technological, or environmental work.
A fair or something.
a joint internships program available online of all neighboring businesses
a news letter on "What's New", if not already implimented
A PRETTIER LOCATION TO LIVE IN. THE CUSE IS RUN DOWN
A separate career fair for local businesse/ opportunities
A strong marketing and advertising campaign.
A tour and better transportation
Absolutely nothing. This is my second go-round in the Upstate/CNY area and I
think it is a deplorable place for young, hip people of color. It has absolutely
nothing to offer in terms of culture (art, museums, real theater) or in terms of
tolerance. If the area really wants to attract more new college graduates, they
should focus on helping people in the area
be more open to diverse populations.
Access to agencies
Accessible listings of local job opps for recent college/graduate school grads.
active recruitment and/or community promotion campaign
Actually have something to offer, Find a way to toally alter the weather.
Actually this area needs to offer more to it's young hip crowd.

advertise and create awareness, because i have no idea about what the area has
to offer since no one ever tells me
Advertise and promote more

Advertise more about internship/co-op opertunities for area companies
advertise more about jobs, put young people who do live and work in the area in
front of the students (e.g., have them come in and talk about their work and
social life, etc), show the benefits of Syracuse vs. a big city, publicize the
ease of which one can travel to a big city like NYC or DC or Boston (lots of
flights, etc)
Advertise more about jobs.
Advertise more about the low cost of living in Syracuse, the beautful parks that
surround us, Armory Square, the many residential neighborhoods and surrounding
towns of the city
Advertise more internship opportunities for undergrads
advertise more on campus about off-campus events
Advertise more to college students
Advertise more, target the college going crowd with information seminars...
Advertise more?
Advertise national businesses that have jobs in the area. We always here about
engineering jobs, Lockheed etc. but what financial, legal, and government sector
jobs exist?
advertise new jobs
Advertise on campus
Advertise on campus more
Advertise places of interest on TV
advertise positions with the university
Advertise the available opprotunities.
advertise the perks of syracuse! make it mandatory to have SU work with seniors
to let them know their options.
advertise through brochures
Advertise young family housing programs, resources

given to students at the beginning of the school year with directions,
phonenumbers
Advertising, seminars, conferences, career fairs, mentoring programs, more
involvement with local companies and the university.
advetise local job openings better, hold more job fairs at the college
Already famaliar with area
Am already very familiar with this area, have lived in central NY for most of my
life.
An email service for recruitment, alumni contacts
Anything
Anything at all, since there arent any programs with this information at all.
Anything! I know absolutely nothing about what this area can offer new college
graduates. I think the most important think to focus on is the entertainment/fun
opportunities the ara can offer.
As far as I'm aware, the City of Syracuse does not currently do anything to keep
graduates in the area. I would imagine some sort of collaborative effort with
career services might be a start.
Asian organizations need to be more active in doing this
Basically CNY colleges attract rich frat/sorority types to get their business
degrees and then they go running back to the city for their job because CNY is
too trashy for them...It sucks but thats the way it goes. I think its actually
the role of the colleges - not the area employers - to keep graduated students
in the area, and they can do this through their
recruiting methods. This is just my perspective as a Syracuse Univers
be a little safer. spruce up the facilities at this school, it's absurd how high
tuition is compared to the shape of buildings, dorms, athletic facilities
Be more like New York City!
Become a safer more comfortable place to live. Also it could expand the city
life with stores, resturants, and a young atmosphere to that college students
would want to hang out in the city.
Begin telling students earlier what the area has to offer, and offering
opportunities for students to leave campus and go to areas other than the mall
during undergraduate studies.
Being from the area I know a lot of what is out there, and through my
participation in Junior Achievement I know the problem with the area being the
'brain drain.' I think building up the city more, such as the armory square area
in Syracuse, would attract a younger generation, with more night life and
business opportunity.
Being more involved in teh community. Often times the only population that is
targeted is on-campus. I think that the area can work on getting out there to
help members of the community get informed.
better public transportation
better advertising and more on campus attempts to show what the area has to
offer, in addition to more externship opportunities.
Better advertising of cultural events, shopping, restaurants
better career fairs
Better communication/announcing as to what programs and opportunities are
available to students throughout the course of the year.
Better Economy
Better inform students on campus about the benefits of the Syracuse area,
besides the mall. If students were enticed to get further off campus with events
of interest, the students would feel better about the society in which they
attend school. We need to be informed about the positive points of Syracuse,
instead of constantly hearing about crime, and
worrying about safety when going too far off campus.
Better Job Offer packages: tuition buy back ect.
Better job opportunity listings
better promotion with job opportunities
better public transportation
Better safety
better signs directing toward the campus..
better transportation
Better transportation.
better weather
better weather?! more fairs - the 40below summit was a good idea but they should
tailor it more to undergrads and have more employers come to career fairs.
Bridge the gap between the university and the greater Syracuse community.
bridge the gap between undergraduate and graduate programs
bring businesses to campus
Bring down the property taxes!
Bring in graduates to speak about their post-graduate experience/careers in
Syracuse, NY. Advertise post-graduate housing and nightlife not connected to
university activity.
Bring in Local area Bussiness people to familiarize students with what Syracuse
has to offer. Offer insentives to college students who choose to stay in the
area and help it grow.
Bring in more community members to discuss opportunties that are offered within
the Syracuse area.
Bring in more recruiters from the area
Bring in people from the area to hold meetings for juniors and seniors on
campus.
bring people to some of the suburbs so they can see some of the other places
they can live besides the city
Brochure upon admission
Brochure, poster, something. you can find everything at school about
anything...except the Syracuse area
brochures
brochures geared toward college kids
Brochures, fairs, people from community to come onto campus and talk to students
Build a nicer, safer, cleaner city with less "projects," and more restaurants in
Armory Square.
Business awareness, community activities and involvement opportunities, housing
availability.
By advertising
By sending us more information in the mail.
Call our school and tell them you want to cometo the job fair to tell us about
your job opportunites for grads
can send out a brochure detailing what it has to offer college graduates
career fair in area directly related to my field of study
career fairs
Career fairs
Career Fairs
Career fairs and on-campus interviewing are most convenient for students,
particularly graduate students who have busy schedules.
Career Fairs on campus, on a fairly regular schedule.
career fairs, emails, ads
Career fairs, local businesses trying to recruit local students.
Career Fairs, publications
Career fairs. Better publicize them and possibly work with different colleges to
make them compulsory.
Centralized housing for younger community. Possible in suburbs 10-15 minutes
away. Need professional sports team, more concerts, more business.
Clearer bus schedules
Collaborate with the universities to draw students to the activities downtown.
Such as cheap tickets, ads etc.
College information booths during events and/or advertising on mass-media
venues.
colorful pamphlets
Come and talk to college students about what their options are for after
graduation. Get them familiar with the area by having organizations that college
students can join outside of the university.
Come speak to classes within each major, recruit on campus, syracuse area career
fair on campus, basically pushing information to students on campus as opposed
to them going out to look for it, esp. since syracuse is not the most desirable
area.
Come speak to soon-to-be graduates
Come talk to students! Firms should send reps to the colleges Career Fairs
Come to campus more often. Advertise positions so we know what's available.
Syracuse as a city isn't very appealing. I would never want to spend the rest of
my life in this city, and I am eager to graduate and move on from it.
Come to campus to introduce themselves, and have professors and authoritative
figures talk about it
Come to campus to recruit students
Come to the career fair that Syracuse University has once a semester. That is
when the students are looking most for a job/internship. Most students atttend
this event.
Come to the university more and make the area look more appealing, but on
campus, we do not get to see the nicer areas of Syracuse.
Companines in the area could combine resources to produce literature (pamplets,
etc) that explains what their business has to offer. This information could be
given to graduate offices at respective universities to distribute.
Concentrate on making job listings readily available.
Conduct job fairs and internship fairs
Conduct office visits, meet alumni in the area, meet the business/economic
leaders in the region
connect you to more local alumni
Contact students
Contact the department and offer some type of expo
Contact the departments or colleges of students that particular companies would
be interested in.
Continue to put up posters and send emails.
Convey a sense of job opportunity and follow up on it with results... I want to
see my friends getting full time work with benefits.
County-wide career/internship fairs
coupons/vouchers/gift certificates to area attractions encourage membership in
local trade groups/clubs
create a job placement service or at least a clearinghouse for CNY public and
private sector jobs (like Monster.com or hotjobs.com)
Create a monthly magazine with job opportunities, living options in this area of
New York, and information about communities.
Create a service that specializes in connecting graduates with entry level job
opportunities. As my fiance has found, none exist, and if they do, they are
impossible to find.
Create a Web site similar to the 144 Things to Do brochure, but keep it up to
date with community events that would be of interest to students. In residence
halls or student organizations, plan events, including transportation, to
certain places. I think it would be really interesting if there were a student
organization that exists as an interface between
students and the community. They could plan a diverse range of events,
Create a well-advertised web site for that purpose, and post
advertisements/fliers around the Syracuse University campus and in the school
newspaper.
Create clubs and sponsor events the get to know people that will relocate to the
same area.
create forums for local architects to speak with architecture students
create more job fairs or job opportunities and reduce outsourcing
create pamphlets, hold meetings
Demonstrate incentive plans for graduating students which include loan paybacks,
housing, non-profit organization profits within my fiels (botany), propose
placement in areas of education, show recreational expansion beyond shopping and
drinking, reconstruct public transportation for easier access and reliability to
more areas of the city and possibly the
nearby citieslike Tully.
Detail where businesses are located, perhaps have more gradutae students discuss
their career path.
Develop more of a brochure to sell Central New York.
develop new opportunities
Difficult to say. SU is almost a closed community and it can be hard for the
outside community to commicate into it. Best bet is probably the career fair
stuff.
Distribute a newspaper for things to do
Do a better job regarding the city/University relationship.
don't honestly know- get rid of snow? get rid of crime? build better
infrastructure within city? entice with tax breaks for small businesses?
don't just tell students what's going on in town, help them find ways to get
there (car pools, public transportation, shuttles)!
Easier and more frequent transportation to areas outside the university.
easily accessed website with calendars, have some social activities start
earlier in the evening
educate us. speakers on campus, events for students downtown, etc
education, job fairs, etc.
eh, nothing much
eMail information
email the students
e-mail, events at SU
E-mails
Emails/brochures/info sessions?
Emphasize more culture/less bar scene
Encourage local buisnesses to offer a local career fair to students and for good
jobs in the area not junk jobs that they would not take anyhow. Also the area
might want to create an availabilty of arts and entertainment that streches
beyond the university because yes i would like to be able to go to Syracuse
sports games as an alumni but the city needs to
have somthing more to offer as well.
Encourage more cultural events, more business/jobs to the area, better public
transportation
Encourage the school to make beter use of the area's existing attractions for
each given major.
energize the city bus publicity, i'd like to take the bus places if i could
understand how the bus schedules worked...i'm from a small town so i've never
had this experience before...
errr Housing opportunities, job fairs, I don't know.
existing architecture or design firms could become more involved with the
Syracuse University community. I don't know how many architecture firms there
are in Syracuse, but as far as I know there is only one that I've heard of.

Have more internship fairs and things on campus for students to go to. They will
go and then go off campus. I am trying to find an off campus internship but it
is so difficult because they don't make it known that they want Syracuse
students...so it would be better if that relationship was stronger.
have more internships and volunteer opportunities made available to students.
have more job fairs
Have more job fairs

Housing and Community Job Fairs
Housing entertainment options public transportation systmes
Housing incentives
Housing, Recreation, Transportation all need GREAT improvments. There is no
'young' housing area such as seen in areas in mid-atlantic states. Modern
recreation is very lacking around here (movie theaters are out-dated, 'the mall'
wasn't interesting after 10 years old, the only nightlife is bars instead of
activities). The ONLY transportation option is
personal vehicle and parking is aweful everywhere, Centro is an unsafe, sl
How about tax incentives for recent grads that stay here? Right now, I can
barely afford to feed my family, and from what I've seen, this is pretty normal
in this neck of the woods. Why would anyone in their right mind want to stay and
suffer through this weather when it's not financially worth it? Answer: Because
the people that are here are STUCK here.
When I tell local people that I left sunny Southern California and a j
I already know the area has no capacity for new teachers.
I am a long term resident and don't need help to familiarize me with the area.
I am already very familiar.
I am interested in job oportunities, post-docs, or support for grant writing. I
am learning by watching.
I am not interested in living here and will not pay attention to anything that
is announced about living here after college
I am not sure im just a freshman.
I am only a freshman, so I do not have a major interest yet in where I will be
living. I imagine that in looking for internships, I'll find something
I am pretty familiarized
I am sorry, but the only attraction of Syracuse is the school. The city is a
dump - and no one seems interested in doing anything about it. The economy is
horrible, and the political leadership is a pathetic excuse!
I am sufficiently familiar. Syracuse needs major economic development. It has
potential, but the growing slums, job loss, and high taxes do not indicate any
direction change toward progress. Meanwhile, streets become worse, and I see
little improvement in the general care of the city. The CENTRO bus system is
basically a lot of low-paid, dreary
workers who drive buses that are not well maintained. Lastly, Syracuse should st
i attend college where i grew up, so i am already familiar with job
opportunities
I believe that Syracuse needs to improve the city as a whole before students
attending school here would consider staying here after receiving a degree.
I commute and work full time back at home and don't have much time to discover
what the area has to offer
I could careless what it has to offer
I do not know...the area is kind of run down and poor and dirty-not very
attractive to most of the students.
I don't care because I don't want to work here.
I don't know the downtown area that well at all, perhaps events there with
incentives to go there?
i don't know, i bet the info is out there if i looked right now.
I dont know. I dont know what is available currently
I don't know. I suppose companies in the area could come to the job fairs to
make their presence known.
I don't know. I'm only a freshman. I haven't even declared a major so I'm not
really thinking about after college yet.
i dont know....have betta bus schedules and more frequent bus schedules at dat.
I don't know...honestly, I was under the impression that it didn't have much to
offer
I dont really care what the area can do, I am never going to work or live in the
Syracuse area.
I don't really know because i haven't explored the oppurtunities in that field
and i'm sure there is plenty of information if i seek it out.
I don't think it can do anything really--my mind's rather made up to not live in
the depressing CNY region.
I don't think it can offer me anything.
I don't think it's a matter of what the area can do to familiarize--the area is
lacking in many different ways. It would be great to have more places to hear
live music, more diverse areas (like Westcott St.), other restaurants.
i dont think much, it does a pretty good job
I don't think that the area could do much, it is really has to do with growing
up in a diversly cultural area.
I don't think the Syracuse Community and the University seek to work well
together as far as the students are concerned. It is difficult for students to
get out of the campus to different social or cultural events (though quality
events of this type appear to be rare). The University does not, and probably
cannot allow new undergraduate students to have their
own transportation during their first year at school, but the transp
i dont understand your question.
I feel I'm pretty familiar with what the area has to offer. But I feel this
region is not growing and is not the best place for me to be. The weather has
also become a large deterrent to me.
I feel that i have a good understanding of what there is to offer in this
community after graduation
I grew up one mile from the university I now attend. I am perfectly familiar
with the many things this community does not offer to new college graduates, or
anyone else.
I have lived all of my life in upstate NY and am very familiar with the area.
I have lived here all my life. I am a commuter. I know all I will know now.
I have lived here most of my life and I am very aware of what this community has
to offer for jobs and furthering education.
I have lived in Syracuse for me then 8 years. I am not comfortable living in
this city and will not be if i stay. I am familiar with a number of things that
are offered in this city but not content on staying here.
I have no reason to stay in New York, nor do I want to.
I have not looked into long term employment in NYS because I HATE the cold, so I
don’t know what the area could do to improve.
I have seen many of the career/job listings and fairs for this area, which seem
to have much of what is currently offered. If there is anything that would help,
it would be to have all listings in one place.
I haven't been given much information at all as a freshman so it's hard to say.
I haven't really been out seeking to find out what the area has to offer at this
point, but I plan to do so in the future. Im not really sure where to start so
some help with finding out how to find out about the area would be helpful.
I know a great deal about what the central new york area has to offer. I don't
think that most college students do, however. Perhaps the university should
collaborate with city initiatives and work with different departments to
encourage community involvement. I personally have greatly valued this aspect of
the Public Affairs program.
I know enough, I just don't like it.
I know exactly what it offers- nothing.
I know that in DC there is an organization called DC Young Professionals which
does a great job helping young professionals interact in a social setting. This
is something that Syracuse could do to encourage people to not only stay in
Syracuse, but also thrive.
i live here, so i don't pay atention much about what they do to familiarize
people
I may be biased because I am from the area, but I don't think that it has much
to offer new graduates at all, unless your parents can give you a job after
graduation.
i really don't know
I think I have a pretty good feel for what the area has to offer.
I think I have a pretty good grasp - I've lived here my whole life.
I think I know what's out there, the question is whether those things offered
are enticing enough. I think Syracuse has a ways to go right now before it is
enticing to college graduates (again as it was pre-1950s), but that's part of
what excites me about staying here--the prospect of making or rejuvinating a
place.
I think it already does a good job, it just happens to be that I have
experienced and am knowledgeable about better opportunities outside of this
area.
I think it does a good job
I think it should show us more tours of companies and the school districts-we
always hear bad things.
I think more advertising of what job oportunities the area has would help.
I think most people at college are familiar with the city's opportunities.
I think SU does a good job of familiarizing it's students
I think that college grads have a pretty good idea of what their life/career
would be like if they stayed in the area.
I think that ESF could do better in terms of posting internships and job
opportunities. Perhaps the reason they don't post as many jobs is because local
businesses and government are not informative enough or there simply aren't any
jobs in the area.
I think that people have a positive attitude toward this area. I'm not sure of
what it can do better because I have not had much experience in this area yet.
I think that the area already does a good job of trying to recruit graduates of
Syracuse University, especially in the Newhouse School. I am well-aware of the
job opportunities available to me (with the Post Standard, New Times, local tv
news stations) but I think that more recruitment fairs are necessary. Also, I
think that professors should stress the
necessity of these recruitment/information fairs: rarely do we hear from the
i wish i knew, maybe hold fairs that tell the community
I wouldn't even know where to begin to figure out what there is around Syracuse.
I would go to a workshop about it if it was offered. Or try to get students out
into the community more through internship opportunities around the City
I'd like to know where recent college graduates would live upon getting a job
here, especially if their families live far away. I don't doubt there are good
jobs in the greater Syracuse area available to students, I'm just not sure how
much of a social life the area can offer recent graduates. Also, some indication
of how much opportunity recent graduates would
have to advance in their fields in the area would be helpful.
If their was more of a social community around the campus it would encourage
people to get out more. I am not talking bars either. Their is a lack of
cultural social hotspots. Such as coffee shops, large enough to draw many
people), book stores, independent theaters, private shops that give an
alternative to major shopping centers, local bars and or
pubs, and most importantly restaurants and cafe's. A great marker of the com
I'm a sophomore and I'm not really looking at graduate work yet or jobs
I'm from the area and worked in Syracuse for a couple of years, so I'm familiar
with what it has to offer.
I'm from the area, so I know what the area has to offer.
I'm not familiar with the area, but I don't see any distinct advantage to living
here.
I'm not sure that there is much. Job fairs are usually well represnted by local
media organizations and they often are offering internships and other
opportunities for students.
i'm not sure, it seems to do a good job at the moment.
I'm not sure, since I have not been looking all that hard. What I have seen of
the area near campus has been limited to walking distance, and the most
memorable parts of that are not all that great. Aside from that, the spike in
crime we seem to get near the beginning of the Fall semester would make me leery
of living near any college campus after I
graduate.
I'm not sure. I'm sure I'll know more as I further my studies.
I'm not sure. I'm still new to the area and I know nothing about what the area
does in terms of trying to let college graduates know about the area. Perhaps
on-campus sessions about post-graduation life?
im not sure. not too familiar with the area yet.
I'm only a freshman. I am sure the city is doing things that I am just not being
exposed to yet. So far, I have seen vertually nothing.
Improve community & university relations.
improve conditions of neighborhood off campus.
Improve infrastructure so I can actually go look at things.
improve public transportation
Improve public transportation, bring more things close to campus
Improving public transportation throughout NYS would be the BEST possible
option--people would be much more willing to go out & experience the "young &
hip community" (not having to drink & drive), explore the area, attend events,
etc., especially because the weather is so bad (which also prevents people from
wanting to go out & drive) through much
of the year, and the city does a terrible job of keeping up with it &
clearing/ma
In my case it doesn't really matter, as I already know where I want to work and
live.
in my field, i can't think of anything
In my field, there are so few jobs that I will most likely have to go wherever
that job is and where my partner would be able to find a job as well -- all over
the country. However, if I have the choice between two similar jobs, there are
lots of things upstate New York or the Syracuse area could do to make itself
more attractive to me: -- Radically improve
public transportation, bike lanes and the education of car drivers re
In my opinion, the area doesn't have a lot to offer as far as jobs. First
Syracuse has to have jobs available to familiarize graduates w/ opportunities in
the area.
Include information about this on the university website or the prospectus
incorporate area job offerings into courses
increase its per capita income to reflect a higher quality of living (ie nicer
homes, roads, malls, etc)
Increase the number of higher paying jobs to incent people to stay.
increased availability of campus operated transportation
Individuals can make a difference in this community - unlike larger cities. Stay
here for an opportunity to direct where this city goes.
inform my department of opportunities
Inform students more about opportunities that are out there for them
Inform the school and send out more information regarding what certain
businesses are looking for and what they have to offer
Inform us at job fairs and workshops. It can also get professors involved.
Inform us on the oppurtunities
Information at career fairs and job expos in major cities, such as New York or
Boston.
Information in e-mails, the career center, seminars
Information isn't readily available. Maybe some kind of life after college
information session for the entire region on opportunities, housing, recreation
and social opportunities, etc would help. Other ideas: pamphlets to be handed
out at colleges, websites
Information on jobs in the area. Get a good job and the rest will fall into
place.
Information packets and seminars
Informational fairs
Informative pamphlets, organizations visiting campus
Interneships with media companies
internships, job fairs, programs to get students off campus and into the
community
Internships, Job postings
internships,fellowships and mentoring
internshjips, talk to professors
Invite faculty members to a free lunch in their respective buildings so that
access is easy. During these lunches give an informal presentation about area
jobs and opportunities for graduating students. Encourage the faculty members to
advise their students beyond graduation and into the workplace.
It can advise students of off-campus activities and maybe provide transportation
for those who don't have any.
It can contact our school to make an appointment or come to a job fair to tell
us about their organization and what it has to offer graduates.
it can expose the students to life outside of the university campus. i don't
know much about what goes on in the city.
It can have more advertising in large areas, such as Syracuse University.
Sometimes students are not aware of what goes on in the city itself.
It can have more conveniant transportation along with more involvement within
the campus.
It can publicize jobs in the area for all fields and not leave it up to the
students to find out. Companies should seek out students in the area.
It can show me a rich and diverse group of artists working together or
separately, hosting openings often. It can show me that I can reasonably try to
make it as an artist, or that there are viable options for freelance artists in
this region.
It could have pamphlets to pass around at the University. The area can have
information sessions through the University or local universities to inform
graduates about the area.
It could make sure that it is well-represented at career fairs on campus, and
have brochures or some form of written material avaiable at career services'
office.
It could publish or distribute some sort of information regarding what
companies/organizations are in the Syracuse Area.
it does well now
it doesn't have anything to offer
It is hard for me to know because I just started college.
It is the responsibility of the student to make that effort to ensure their
happiness in the future, the community should not have to hold college students
hands, and baby them.
It needs to provide better and easier transportation.
It should be easier to access, its nearly impossible for freshman to get off
campus unless its to go to the mall. That's not seeing what Syracuse has to
offer.
It should include many computer programs/software since the area also deals with
media production.
It's not "the area's" job to familiarize me with such things. I have to believe
that for the most part, people work either where they come from or where they're
going to get paid best, two things beyond "the area's" control. Bring in high
paying jobs, if you build it, they will come.
Its not familiarizing graduates but providing graduates with opportunities in
the area.
It's pretty good right now- maybe search for more diverse options rather than
just the traditional things everyone is farmiliar with.
I've heard nothing about programs here in Syracuse...perhaps an advertising
campaign to make us more aware of what Syracuse has to offer. I think most
students are ready to flee Syracuse once school is over - and that's because SU
is such a campus-y school. A lot of students just don't have any idea what
Syracuse the City is like...so the University
should make an effort to open our eyes to the Syracuse Community.

Make an effort to welcome college students as new residents. The political
dichotomy of upstate's rural/urban voters makes it nearly impossible for the
government to fund anything that would benefit the college/liberal demographic.
We *want* decreased urban sprawl, hip neighborhoods that are walkable, with
boutique type stores and entertainment. We
*get* plans for a giant friggin' mall.
Make cultural events advertised on the campus and surrounding areas to raise
awareness of students.
make information more accessible
Make it easier (and more appealing) to get into town
Make it easier to find jobs. Or at least present the idea that finding a job is
possible after graduation. No one likes the idea of getting out of college and
not being able to find a job. It feels like you just wasted your time and moeny
going to college, especially when you got to career services and they tell you
that your education is useless because you can't
type 70 words a minute.
make it known. get on campus and inform the studetns
Make it more of a hip community.
Make it safer!
Make known the opportunities to get involved while we're still students, instead
of waiting until after we graduate.
make materials available to students and new graduates at the University and in
noticable places, for example posters, flyers, websites, etc.
Make me believe that it is safe to venture out into the area.
Make more broadly known that pamphlets etc. exist to tell you about dining/fun
things/etc. in the area
Make more fun things to do for kids under 21. MAKE IT SAFER. It is so run down
it is almost disgusting.
Make more nightlife activities available and advertise them....also i have not
seen very many job fairs visible around the city.
Make students more aware of options after college. Special housing and career
opportunities.
make sure there are a lot of job fairs for every type of major
Make sure Walmart doesn't come in and knock out smaller area business, so that
there will be some jobs left for college graduates. Have job fairs and let the
local industries present what they have to offer.
Make Syracuse seem exciting, and a vibrant place to be, and let students know of
job opportunities in the area.
Make the city (downtown) more connected with the university. It offers a wealth
of opportunity and entertainment, but most students haven't even ventured to it,
thinking it's a crappy rundown palce. I know this seems like a crazy idea, but a
light rail that connects a few area colleges, the city and the airport would do
wonders. Sure there is ONTRACK, but
it is somewhat restricted in where it can stop. In a more feasable man
make the information available with the information about the university itself
make the university less secluded from the rest of the city, have more cultural
events or job fairs both here and downtown
Make their presence more knownn on campus or at least give notice of events that
they will be attending. A lot of people that come to SU are not from the local
area they are from NYC areas
make them aware to students
make transportation easier, and advertise the attractions more
making students go to seminars that inform us about the area or informing
professors, so that they can tell us about the area.
Mandatory information session to demonstrate career opportunities for young
grads. Go after people with ties to upstate New York. Internships relevant to
coursework for students.
market heavily to the Career Development Center and send out e-mails, have a
website, just create a presence around campus.
Maybe a Graduate day for those who are about to enter the work force and don't
even know where to begin. Such as housing opportunities and such.
Maybe a seminar held at the school for college students who are about to
graduate.
Maybe a seminar offered at the university, or brochrues
maybe a website
Maybe along with job fairs, they could have apartment fairs! Let new graduates
see what different places have to offer
Maybe create a specielized CNY employment website?
maybe have a college fair of local job opportunities...they don't seem to ever
have anythign in my field though.
Maybe have a job fair type of thing set up at Schine. Advertise a website, etc.
maybe have representatives from local offices attend career and internship fairs
or even host information sessions to show students that there are in fact job
opportunities with decent pay in the area
Maybe have representatives of the town come to talk to us, or email us or have
more advertising.
Maybe hold more major oriented graduate info sessions. For instance, a graduate
school expo specificallly targeted towards engineers who plan on attending
graduate school.
maybe informational meetings about the type of work that is avalible around
syracuse. Or a work day where you get to view different jobs.
Maybe just advertise on things that go on in the community itself more as
opposed to just campus happenings. I don't know any other areas in Syracuse
besides near campus.
Maybe offer a brochure or advertisment showing what the area offers.
Maybe setting up an information tables around the college areas.
maybe show us what we have options. Talk about work in the area etc.

Perhaps offering more informational brochures on what the area has to offer,
because I am not from Syracuse and don't have time to attend information
sessions.
Perhaps send out brochures and handouts about what the advantages of living in
the upstate New York area are. Also, establishing a website would be a valuable

recruitment, on-campus presence
Recruting efforts on campus need to be more publicized. The community needs to
have something to offer before they can familiarize me with it. In the end, this
community can in no way use the services of someone with a degree in
International Relations. Also, there needs to be a more vibrant cultural life,
and a deeper intelectual atmosphere to offer
anything attractive to young people. Also the jobs here are low paying. (Or at

showing area such as buisnesses and living
Simply spread the word, as there isn't currently a lot of information provided
to soon-to-be graduates. Also, if the community is willing to support the Arts
in attendance as well as financially then there would be a stronger pull on
recent graduates of those fields to remain in the area.
Sned detailed information and hold more job fairs
Some sort of comprehensive digital or web material offering career opportunities
or other information for people my age.

speakers, career fairs
Start a program with information center readily available
Start initiatives on campus for juniors and seniors to get a better feel for the
area and what it has to offer for graduates in terms of jobs, housing,
recreation, etc.
Start somewhere. I'm unaware it does anything to inform new college grads.
However, even if it did so, I wouldn't be swayed. I'm returning home after
college, and I'm set in that.
Stop being so cold, Clean up the area a bit. Not job fairs, but send us flyers
about hirings.
Stop flooding my e-mail with messages everyone deletes and find some other way
to communicate with students.
stronger internship program in area.
Supply more free transportation.
SU's career exploration services are great, and the academic advisors are very
helpful with registration and carrer paths and planning. The only imporvement
that could be made is to maybe provide carrer exploration services such as job
shadowing or assistance opportunities for students that do not have the academic
experience or certainty of career
pursuit to participate in these opportunities. For example, freshmen and
sophmore
Syracuse can be more inviting, engaging, and accepting.
Syracuse has many many problems beyond just familiarizing new graduates. Try
reducing the crime, and having the police be more repsonsive, friendly, and
cooperative. The Police are more concerned with students drinking (which will
happen no matter what) instead of the robberies, stabbings, and shootings in the
area. The police take about an hour to
respond to any emergency, such as violence off campus, yet take 10 minutes with

Syracuse is a dead city. There is a huge segment of the population that does not
participate with the one remaining "business" in town--Syracuse University. That
is somewhat of a generalization, but relatively accuarate.
Syracuse is not a nice area to begin with. It needs alot of industrial
development to even street cleaning. Its not a very inviting, interesting city.
Student interns in the city would be more likely if students liked the city or
weren't affraid to work there.
Syracuse itself has a very unsafe living atmosphere. They should try to improve
on the housing and educate undergraduates of the companies and opportunities
within these establishments. There is also not an ideal environment for
graduates to be entertained. The city appeals more to college students than to a
recent graduate that wants a new, fresh
environment.
Syracuse needs to work on its economy to attract college grads
Syracuse suffers from both urban blight and bleak weather. But is is cheap. If I
was convinced that Syracuse was going to seriously invest and promote artistic
culture, then I would be interested in staying. I honestly believe that real
investment in creativity could turn Syracuse's weaker aspects into a kind of
charm. Young, hip (counter)culture is good at
turning ugliness into something attractive. If I could be convinced thi
Syracuse University could offer more entertainment opportunities in the city
than what it does. It does wonderful within the college community but it does
not offer discount prices for other area entertainment.
take care of the crime, offer more jobs, increase the wealth in the area, tear
down the low income housing
Take us out more into the community
Talk about it some
Talk more about internships or job opportunities.
Talk to people already out in the area working
Talk with students on campus
Talk with Syracuse University
tell me about internships and job that relate to my career path
Tell me what the new college graduates are doing now and where they are living
Tell me, intergrate into classes
Tell places to live that are safe and afordable.
tell us more in person instead of books
tell us what it has to offer us
tell us, advertise, show us something besides the ugly parts of the city of
syracuse
The area could hold programs to better inform students of the opportunities
available and to make them more appealing. Maybe office/building tours could be
offered to students looking into that field of study.
The area could offer more advertisements as to what is going on in the area. I
would like to know what areas around Syracuse, and even in Syracuse, have to
offer a person living here.
the area doesn't need to do anything more to familiarize me with the area. if it
wants me to stay, it has to stop snowing!
The area is losing jobs, not creating jobs.
The area just appears poor with lots of crime around the university--so showing
other areas that are more prosperous
the area needs to recruit more heavily for specific majors that they find
appealing.
The area should show me its ability to support the type of work I wish to do for
some time. It should offer a good cultural scene that I can enjoy in my still
young life.
the career services in the law school needs to offer more guidance and support
in alumni networking
The city needs revamping before it can attract anyone, young or old, to settle
here.
The city of Syracuse could advertise better with job offerings or internships.
The city of Syracuse is sort of industrialized or rural, and its not the area
fault. it just does not have the fast-paced lifestyle and upbeat job
opportunities that college graduates crave.
The college could offer more information on the subject, apart from simply
handing things out at career fairs.
The internship was a great way to familiarize me with the city, its residents
and my future profession.
The main reason I would not live in Syracuse area is lack of accessibility to
good restaurants and shopping. Also, there is a total lack of respect for the
environment in the Syracuse city area.
the schools need to outreach to the community and integrate the two. Schools
barely know the community (other than the bars).
The Universities mentioned for this survey need to form better partnerships with
the communities in which they exist. Incentives should also be put in place so
that students, regardless of major, can take a semester of work in the
communities in which they are living. Furthermore, invite the community to
campus.
The University and the are must do a beeter job at connecting businesses with
the students. This should be done through internships, entry-level jobs.
The university district seems to appeal to the most basal and consumerist
desires of young people with too much dispoable income. Cultrual and educational
opportunities seem to be smothered by the
shopping/drinking/pre-fabricated+disposable sectors of the local economy.
there are few jobs available in the area for chemistry PhD's, i'm already
familiar with that
there are magazines adn what not that show waht is goign on...but perhaps a
website that is tailored better to the students than syracuse.com...that website
is primary for the public
There could be a few seminars with overviews. Also, it can advertise and inform
the college population more.
There is not much recruting on campus for those persons wishing to stay in the
area. As a Syracuse native, I would love to stay in the area and work here, but
it's just not something that can happen given the low salaries and small amounts
of jobs available.
There isn't much to do here - there is not a big market for graudate level
degree employees
there needs to be more things for students to do and easier ways to get there
There was no part of my "orientation" to Syracuse University that included
anything happening off campus. There were little to no helpful services which
provided me with guidance on where to live, or what was available in Syracuse. I
had trouble just finding the grocery store! And the obviously high crime rate
was not included in any orientation.
They are doing a good job, now. But maybe have a lot of information in one area
rather than a lot of information in a lot of areas.
They can offer more job fairs, and career orientations for recently graduated
students. They could also offer housing incentives for graduates who plan to
stay in the area. For example an apartments complex could offer first months
rent free for recently graduated SU students.
They could advertise in more unique areas on campus. Everytime I see activities
unaffiliated with the university being advertised, they are all cluttered
together so I never stop to look at any of them.
They do a great job as it is. One idea, though, is maybe have a newletter sent
to all students as to events, sports, concerts, speakers, etc. Not just from
departments, but from Student Activities.
they do enough. people dont want to stay because the city has a bad economy.
there is no way to put a positive spin on that.
They need more businesses and better outreach programs. A lot of people around
here have no idea what they want to do. If they do know what they want, they
have no where to turn to for help.
They need to make their entertainment and nightlife more apparent to those who
live in the surrounding area. Offer more deals and specials that are marketed
more clearly.
This area nees to be willing to allow new developements such as Destiny USA and
the Childrens hospital. Property taxes need to be reduced. Albany needs to get
its act together.
this just doesn't seem to be a place where recent college grads want to be,
after 4-5 years of the weather, it's time to get out, and the city is not that
exciting...i don't think we need any more information...we are aware that
attempts have been made to make it a more desirable destination for recent
college grads, but it's just not there yet.
to be able to go to one location and see what types of availibilites are out
there, even if it requires short experience work and the qualities that they are
looking for.
To better familiarize me with what the area has to offer new graduates,
different representatives could make themselves more present on campus and could
make more of an effort to promote the area. Perhaps it is only because I am a
freshman, but I have not really seen anyone from the community trying to promote
the area to undergraduates at
Syracuse University.
to show how to actually succeed in the real world more real world ties to the
university
tours of the area
tours, brochures, student discounts
transportation
Trips to NY, NY...more internships in NYC. More advertisement about internships,
classes to be taken in NYC over the summer.
Try to advertise better...I don't know how well this will work though because SU
students are obvious and we are very desensitized so we block out messages.
Uhm, I dunno, what does this area have to offer new college graduates, really?
Slim chances for a good-paying job? Horrible weather for 6 months of the year?
Sky-high taxes? Utterly moronic drivers who turn even the shortest errand-run
into a terrifying brush with death? I guess the region's collective chambers of
commerce could put up a website or
something. My generation supposedly responds to "interactivity."
Utilize freshman orientation programs to inform new students about the area in
which they are living in. Have a representative from the community (city, town,
etc.) talk about what the community has to offer. They are being not only
welcomed into the university/college community but oftentime a new area
community as well. They should feel welcome in
both regards. Encourage community service - outside the university. Setup part
Visit campus more often, have more extensive job fairs
warm up, open more businesses
We have a lot of resources
Website/news/listings of high tech job openings near the area
welcome us to the city more...show us around, familiarize us with the area
Well first of all, the University can try to collaborate more with the community
so that the two can work together to make a better standard of living. This
would also help keep some of the students in the area and may.
Well, since I wouldn't be teaching at Syracuse, I really don't think it would
matter. If it did, I think I heard something about a youth (college age)
conference happening downtown about how to keep that demographic around. That
should have been publicized more.
Well, specifically in engineering, I'd like to see local and regional
engineering companies involve themselves in engineering students early on in the
process. It would help prospective engineering students figure out what sort of
field they'd be intersted in, since engineering encompasses a lot..
what does it have to offer?
What is the job market like
Which area? The one I go to school in or the one I want to live in? School- they
are doing a good job. NYC- have a program through SU that helps new grads get
set up in the city and helps them find affordable housing, etc. because so many
people at SU plan on moving to New York
who is "the area"? the city could publish activity pamphlets and put them around
campus about why a person would want to settle here.
Work collaboratively with the University to offer internship opportunities in
the area for a broader range of areas of study.
Work college students into real post-grad jobs through internships.
work with colleges and universities to have co-ops and internships.. actively
recruit students who are soon due to graduate

All we see for the most part is the undergraduate side of college life, we don't
really see what else the community offers besides for the duration of these 4
years. There don't seem to be many engineering jobs around here except as a
graduate student and for research for the university. If this is not the case,
we certainly don't see that and therefore this
area is an unlikely destination after graduation.

Career Center Programs
Clarkson University already has a well-organized Career Center where students
can go to see about career opportunities. However, possibly contacting colleges
and universities and perhaps having them send out mass emails to their students
about possible careers may work well.
Come and talk to us about the job opportunites here. We have two career fairs
during the year and if they were to come there and speak to us about staying
here upon graduation and what they have to offer us, I think many more people
would get a better understanding of the job opportunities up here and would be
more willing to settle here.

hold info sessions
Hold more career fairs or have seminars put on by interested companies. The
career fairs should cater more to my majors and interests, rather than focusing
in engineering students (which our university tends to do)
host a job fair
I basically know what i need to because my friends that are in the program tell
me.
I domt really belive its the areas job to do that it should be up to the college
to tell you those things.
I don't believe this area offers much to new college graduates.
I don't know I have not gotten any help from anyone yet.
I don't know, offer more co-op or internships during our college years? Make the
companies do tons of attempts to hire us so that we feel our values are
appreciated? Beats me.
I feel that the program I am in at Clarkson University, Industrial Hygiene and
Environmental Toxicology should be emphasized more to the biology, chemistry,
and biomolecular science students as an additional option to double major in, or
minor in. I have a double major in IH and Environmental Toxicology and
Biomolecular Science, and I love it.
I find the area has somewhat alot to offer.
I have already done this.
I have no idea what you could do. Syracuse, to all outsiders, has nothing to
draw them. Syracuse just cannot compete with the other cities in NY state and I
do not know what you could do.
I honestly am not sure. Considering how little the area actually seems to offer,
either a massive (but honest) PR campaign, or nothing at all.
I need to do a one year residency before I can become a licensed funeral
director, and it is obviously important that I can find a job near the Houghton
area. It would be helpful if the college would help out in setting that up. They
don't as of now.
I personally search for everything I need to know online..and there seems to be
plenty of information at my disposal.
I think it does a fine job.
I think the area does a good job at it.

It can hold more number of outdoor activities to see the area around.
IT CAN SHOW THAT THE NORTH COUNTRY IS NOT AS EXTREMELY CRAPPY AS IT FEELS
It could do a internship in my area of study
It does a fine job as is.
It does well in that area
it is near places you need to go to
It must specify that the scenery is very different from a city scenery.
It should make the information available somehow, hiring the students should
also have to information available to prospective employees.

opportunities
List more jobs and help students get a job after graduating from college

My area really can't do very much but the surrounding areas of my hometown may
be able to give me some of the work and the training that I will need to become
a successful lawyer in this world.
new york city colleges
New York state needs to make New York City a district or something, to lower
taxes. That is the biggest reason. Our state has the highest taxes anywhere, and
we are a horrible state when it comes to jobs etc.
No idea. unfortunately, there don't appear to be many opportunities in Northern
New York.
Nothing I am from the area
Nothing i think they do a good job.
nothing really i have lived here my whole life.
Nothing really I know just about everything i need to know about the area since

nothing, everything is good
Nothing, I am satisfied with the way it is now.
nothing, i have lived in this area all my life.
Nothing, I know what it has to offer.
nothing, it's just right
Nothing. Clarkson has a very good group of advisors that have all of the
information about grad school for all of us undergrads. It is up to us, however,
to decide what we do with this information.
Nothing. There are no jobs around here for computer science majors. The
possibility of telecommuting would be nice :)
Nothing. I've lived here my whole life!
Offer more activities for students off-campus
offer more activities for students...since it is such a small town, there isn't
much to do.
Offer more informational job fairs
Offer more job fairs to show college graduates from the area what types of
careers that are available in the area. This would better allow students to
adjust their carrer objectives to better suit a career that interests them that
is available in the area.
Offer more job opportunities for my field
offer more stuff near us
Offer some sort of listing for all local jobs, salary and their requirements, as
well as housing listings as well.
OH, this is such a stupid survey. Being young and hip is not somehting a place
is, it's something people are. And young doesn't mean hip, nor hip young.
Organize a program similar to that of Syracuse to promote college graduates to
stick around in the area.
Post events and activities on television and on the campus website
Post posters in the dining areas and halls to make sure they are noticed by
students.
Potsdam area has NOTHING attractive to a single college age individual. There
would need to be a significant financial benefit to locating here after
graduation. I think if you are refering to the syracuse area there is a much
greater chance of having students remain there. It is difficult to understand
what some of your questions are asking- is it my college
town or syracuse i am supposed to think of?
potsdam sucks, clarkson sucks, there is no good way to present it
probably very little. It is too small to offer much in the way of job prospects
Professors incidate in class-more brochures- meetings anything...
PROVIDE A BROCHURE OF CURRENT HAPPENINGS OR SPOTS TO HANG OUT AT...
Provide more readily available (visable) information about employment
oppertunities

Send out brochures to current college students.

city/village has to offer for new graduates and why they should go there.
Send out information so new students can get a better feel of what the college
has to offer
send out letters about whats around

it as I drive by or hearing it by word-of-mouth.
Some sort of publication in which North Country / Upstate technical firms
publish the fact that they exist.
store locations
teach us it for once
Tell us something about what they offer....
tell where all the good paying jobs are
The area could create an easier way to find the costs of living in the area.
The area should have more interships and more programs avilable to help students
decide their majors.
The college should better communicate with the students how they can obtain such
information about areas they are looking into moving in and what are the job
oferings in their field.
the colleges students attend should let the students know that they have career
counseling assistance available more.
The kind of living atmoshphere that it has and how many job opportunities there
are.
The problem is that there is nothing to familiarize with. Northern New York is
most borring, bleak and miserable part of this world. The only thing it has
going for it is the proximity to Canada. So that students can get to
civilization in Ottowa, Montreal and Toronto. The greater Syracuse area, as you
call it, is best left for those who like the color Grey and
like to be miserable all the time. You need to have something in
The schools and hospitals can advertise better in the newspaper.
The stores close at 5pm on week days and even ealier on weekends.
the town is too small to ever have much business oppurtunitis in my field
there is alot of stuff to do here...
There is nothing in the North Country to keep people here. You have to travel
45minutes to an 1hour to get to a mall and major fast food places. There is no
opportunity for advancement living in st lawrence county
there should be a paper produced that companies from surrounding areas can write
in to let college students know exactly what their company does, pays and any
pertinent information that would help students decide where they want to go
after they graduate
They can tell us what jobs are avaiable and tell us if there are any internships
around the area.
They could relay that information to us in first year seminar. And then in the
senior one, suggest different jobs in the area based on the most popular majors.
They should hand out pamphlets of what there is to do in the area or what jobs
are available and how to get those jobs. They could offer tips of what you
should do to get a job there.
This area has nothing to offer to college graduates, its a wasteland up here.
this area has very little to offer for recently graduated college students.
there are very few museums or cultural places to go. very few nice restaraunts
to eat at. very little of everthing. This area needs to keep up with the times,
it is scary how removed the north country is from the rest of NY state. half of
the people up here have never even met a Jewish
person. I would really like to see the north county develope some
This area is depressed as far as jobs go, this area needs to take advantage of
how cheap it is to do business here and the large pool of employees to choose
from.
This is a relatively small place compared to cities.....not very active or more
aptly, vibrant. Well, if you want to familiarize me, I woulldn't know what to
say..........but this is what i belive the place lacks.
Truthfully I think the area is boring and I dont recommend anyone comming up
here for school or even to live.
TV commercials and email advertisments. Maybe coming to visit other colleges to
talk about what the have to offer other than Career Day.
Website, get the information out there
What jobs are in the most marketable for the area I want to live in.
workshops? advertisement, pamphlets...

Tompkins County (responses
from students pursuing degrees at campuses in Tompkins County)
Have a well layed
out website that doesn't focus itself solely on trying to sell the area to
prospectives but focuses more on providing a wealth of information about the
area. Also - in the
area itself, promote businesses (small or chain enterprises) that college
graduates like.
Attract more businesses with jobs in the first place.
have professors tell us about job opportunities or jobs that they know students
have gotten
Put out job postings or make a website about what jobs are available in the area
for new
graduates.
send more recruiters to campuses to interview
There isn't anything it can do.
